Story from Mariia
Please help me save my leg!
29.10.2023 I had a serious accident in Indonesia.
I think it has already changed my life fundamentally.
After I was brought to the clinic, where there was a surgeon at the time, I was operated on 14 hours after the accident. I had been bleeding for 12.5 hours.
After the operation, they didn't tell me anything - it was alarming. I had to cut off 2 fingers, 3 are still in question. All the radial bones were broken, except for the thumb.
The insurance company refused to provide guarantees and I can only rely on myself and caring people.
04.11.2023
I had another surgery to remove the skin, which did not take root. Every day I have bandages, we are waiting for granulation to transplant the skin, but there is not enough money.
13.11.2023
I move to Mandara. The surgeon refuses to change the dressing every day. In 5 days, muscle necrosis begins.
17.11.2023
I write a refusal of treatment and go to the Murni clinic. A good man, just after learning my story, recommended me a doctor here. I am not sure until the last moment, but it seems to me that he can be trusted. We are working on the wounds, there is progress.

I feel everyone's support and deeply appreciate everyone's help ❤ You can't imagine, how meaningful you are!
19.11.2023
I am informed that the chances of walking if I leave the fixation as it is are minimal. Two surgeons (orthopedists and plastic surgeons) offer me a solution. The most difficult thing in my life. There are great risks. Either not to walk or, on the other hand, the risk of amputation.
I don't know what will happen next; I want to believe everything will be fine.
I am asking for help because I can't carry it alone anymore.

21.11.2023
Metal - is a magnet for infection.
Two surgeons (orthopedists and plastic surgeons) offer me an alternative solution. The most difficult thing in my life.
To make double surgery: to remove wires, to open the wound, to clean it if needed, to clean the second toe, and to fix all bones in proper position using not wires but titanium screw. They cover less.
The more time passes, the more boundaries accrue between bones in an irregular position.

26.11.2023
The plastic surgeon asked me about where I would like to have a scar after a skin graft. 3 days later, there was no response from the orthopedic surgeon. I have a good relationship with nurses, and they told me that he doesn't think having surgery before the results is a good idea.
I still don't know when the surgery will be.

I already spent $ 39,000, and I still have at least $ 34,000 to spend. My debt is $27.

Ahead in the best-case scenario we all hope for:
Surgery: $12,000
Possible second surgery: 3-4 000$
Maintenance of the condition and stay in the hospital under the supervision of doctors for 3-4 weeks: 17 - 25 000$
Not including rehabilitation and recovery/learning to walk with special equipment.

Updates
MY ORTHOPEDIC DOCTOR ASKED HIS KOREAN PROFESSOR TO COME AND ASSIST ME IN THE OPERATION. THE POINT IS THAT MY BONES WERE MORE DESTRUCTED THAN ON X-RAY. THE SURGERY WAS HELD FOR 7 HOURS INSTEAD OF 3. FIRSTLY, A PLASTIC SURGEON OPENED THE WOUND, CLEANED IT, AND MY ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON COLLECTED PIECES OF MY 5TH-LINE BONES INTO ONE. HE FIXED IT BY STRING, SO WE SHOULD BE CAREFUL. AFTER THAT, MY PLASTIC SURGEON WAS MODELING ME FOR 5 HOURS. THEY DONE JUVELIER WORK! I WOKED UP 3 TIMES DURING THE SURGERY. THAT WAS RIGHT DECIDION. IF WE WOULDN'T OPEN THE WOUND, THERE WAS NO CHANCE FOR ME TO WALK..
January update
Right now, Mariia have still open wounds and not aligned bones and still requires everyday bandages, each costing 80-100$ per day. The doctor is trying to save dead skin using steroids and antibiotics. Also, there are some offers to go to Vietnam, but the risks are too high, so they are still being negotiated.
To prevent broken bones in the future, Mariia needs protests, which cost from 3 up to 5 000$.
All donated costs go exceptionally to her health. She couldn't work with full power right now, but she tried. The painkiller also causes gastric.
May 2024 updates
Right now, Mariia still has an infection in the wound. Thatis Pseudomonas aeruginosa

In the photos, you can see a CT scan showing that the bones are destructive. Mariia definitely has osteomyelitis and may have osteoporosis. For diagnosis, she needs to do an MRI. In the case of osteomyelitis, she needs to remove 3 bones as they are infected at this moment. If the infection is not in the bones, that would be enough to remove the screws.

June 2024 updates
Dear friends, it's been 7 months since I started fighting to save my leg. This journey has been tough: amputation, multiple fractures, three surgeries, and an infection turned my wound into a chronic one. But we've achieved great success — the skin has closed, and now we're waiting for it to strengthen.

Although my temperature has been 38°C (100.4°F) for 5 days, doctors recommend monitoring it. During this time, I've developed osteoporosis, ankylosis, and arthritis. The bones haven't healed yet, and doctors advise putting weight on the leg, even with fractures, to avoid disability due to weak bones.

My goals:
🦾 Prosthesis — $2,439 to $4,878.05
🦴 Bone treatment (PNP procedures) — $200 each
🦿 Rehabilitation — $37 for a consultation, $74 per hour with a therapist

We did the impossible — beat the infection, and my body grew muscle and skin on its own. I am endlessly grateful to everyone who has supported me on this journey ❤️. But there's still a long way to go, and I need your help for further treatment and rehabilitation.

Every bit of your help brings me closer to recovery and the ability to walk again. Together, we can achieve more!

FAQ (from my friend)

Why haven't I returned home or explored other countries?

Traveling isn't an option for me right now. It's not just a simple broken bone; my situation is complex. If you'd like to understand better, feel free to send me a private message, and I can share the doctor's daily reports and documents without going into too much detail. I want to send you a photo of my wound.

Why is the cost so high?

Well, here on the island, things work a bit differently. I've encountered what I can only describe as a "medical mafia." Having switched between three clinics, including a government-run one, I can say that there are certain irregularities in the medical system. Sometimes, it seems like they aim to worsen a patient's condition to charge more. Currently, I'm being treated at a middle-class clinic, but when I first arrived, my condition was dire. Imagine being bedridden for a month with an open fracture and tissue necrosis. I've used up all my savings, even gone into debt, and received minimal treatment and, in some cases, even a worsening of my condition. For instance, one clinic charged me for a "miniplate" never used on my foot. My current orthopedist knows this but remains silent due to professional ethics. I won't even get started on another clinic that billed me an extra 8 million for medicines I didn't use, like cough syrup! They speculate on the patient's condition. The treatment is undoubtedly costly in the current clinic, but it's relatively affordable for Bali standards. I'm also discussing a possible discount, which I'll share when it's finalized. If everything had been done correctly, the initial surgery would have cost half as much. Sadly, its quality now rates a 1 out of 10, even by Bali's standards.

Why isn't the insurance company assisting?

That's a valid question, and I'm actively working on it with my lawyer. So far, he's advised me to rely primarily on my efforts.

Why donate to help a girl's leg in Bali when Ukrainian soldiers at the front are facing life-altering injuries?

I wholeheartedly support donations to our brave soldiers and sign petitions to help them whenever I can. I'm not in competition with our heroes. If someone believes their contribution would make a more significant impact by supporting our soldiers, I'm all for it, with every fiber of my being.

Where are your parents and friends? Why aren't they helping?

I've been fortunate to have an incredible circle of friends who have provided emotional and financial support. I helped my parents financially and requested they keep my situation private. Unfortunately, when the news got out, it led to additional concerns, especially from my loving and worried mother and my 89-year-old grandmother, whom I cherish deeply. I can't express how grateful I am for my friends; they've helped me by giving me money in debt when it was urgent and gathering donations. I'm fortunate to be surrounded by such wonderful people. I understand that not everyone has such a supportive network, and I would like to help those in such a situation. But I hope nobody will.
